The Trump administration has backed this initiative as part of a broader strategy to create a leaner federal workforce. Already, over 75,000 federal workers have accepted “deferred resignations” through the downsizing efforts led by DOGE.

Critics have voiced serious concerns about the program. Senator Lisa Murkowski called the process intimidating and disrespectful to long-serving federal employees.
