What happens when machines start to think like humans? Scientists and engineers are exploring artificial consciousness (AC), the idea that computers might one day possess consciousness. This field combines artificial intelligence with the study of human awareness, looking at how machines might process information like we do.

AC, also called machine or digital consciousness, isn’t just about making smart computers. It’s about creating systems that might have subjective experiences. Researchers distinguish between “access consciousness,” which involves reporting information, and “phenomenal consciousness,” which refers to subjective feelings or “what-it-is-like” experiences.

Creating conscious machines goes beyond intelligence—it seeks systems capable of genuine subjective experience.

The challenge is what philosopher David Chalmers calls the “hard problem” – explaining why and how subjective experiences happen at all. This is different from building intelligent machines. A computer can be very smart without being conscious.

Scientists like Bernard Baars suggest that conscious machines would need several functions, including self-monitoring, decision-making, and adaptation. Igor Aleksander proposes 12 principles for AC, including the ability to predict events and be aware of oneself. Much like Claude AI from Anthropic, future systems may need to balance ethical principles with processing capabilities to approach anything resembling consciousness.

One popular approach is Global Workspace Theory. It suggests consciousness works like a central information exchange in the brain. This idea might help build AI systems that share information across different modules, similar to how our brains work. Wallach and colleagues proposed an AI architecture based on GWT that allows multiple specialized processors to compete for control, adapting to various ethical situations.

Researchers have created ways to measure cognitive consciousness. The Lambda measure predicts most current AI systems, especially neural networks, have zero consciousness. There’s a big gap between human awareness and what machines can do.

Modern AI can handle ethical puzzles like the trolley problem, but at levels far below human understanding. Recent developments have sparked debates about AI sentience, as seen when Google engineer Blake Lemoine controversially claimed the LaMDA chatbot showed signs of true sentience, though most experts dismissed this as sophisticated mimicry. If machines ever became truly conscious, it would raise important ethical questions about their rights and responsibilities.

Current systems only mimic aspects of consciousness. They lack the brain’s complexity and don’t truly experience the world as we do. Whether machines will ever cross this boundary remains one of science’s biggest questions.
