Microsoft is ending Skype after more than two decades of service. The company announced on February 28, 2025, that the consumer version of Skype will shut down completely on May 5, 2025. This marks the end for one of the pioneering platforms in internet-based communication that helped people connect across the world.
Jeff Teper, president of collaborative apps at Microsoft, explained that evolving technology has led to this decision. Microsoft now wants users to switch to Teams, which it describes as a “modern communications and collaboration hub” with enhanced features beyond what Skype offers.
Users don’t need to worry about losing their contacts or chat history. Microsoft has created a path for people to sign into Teams with their existing Skype accounts. The company will preserve contacts and conversation records during this change. Microsoft has also published guides and tutorials to help users make the switch.
The shutdown only affects the consumer version of Skype. Skype for Business Online already ended on July 31, 2021. However, Skype for Business Server 2019 and 2015 will continue receiving support until October 14, 2025, so organizations using these versions aren’t immediately affected.
Teams offers several advantages over Skype. It combines chat, video meetings, file sharing, and calling in one application. It also has better security features and works well for people who work remotely. Microsoft continues to develop Teams while Skype has been in maintenance mode. During the transition period, users can still communicate between the two platforms as Teams and Skype remain interoperable.
Skype has a rich history in internet communication. Microsoft bought it in 2011 for $8.5 billion. The service made video calling mainstream and became a household name for international communication long before many competitors existed.
Users have about two months left to export their Skype data or migrate to Teams. One impressive advantage of Teams is its ability to host up to 10,000 participants in a single video call, significantly expanding collaboration possibilities. Microsoft will keep Skype fully operational until the final shutdown date, giving people time to adjust to the new platform.
