global user connection platform

While many users have enjoyed one-on-one conversations with ChatGPT, OpenAI has now transformed the experience into a social platform through its new group chat feature. The company has completed a global rollout, making group chats available to all users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans by November 2025. The feature first appeared in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan before expanding worldwide within just one week.

The new group chat runs on OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.1 model. Users can create groups by clicking the people icon or sharing invite links. When someone joins, they set up a profile with their name, username, and photo. This personalization helps ChatGPT interact more naturally with each person in the group.

ChatGPT takes a different approach in group settings. It doesn’t respond to every message, instead choosing when to chime in based on the conversation flow. Users can tag ChatGPT directly when they need its input. The AI can even react with emojis and reference users’ profile photos in custom images.

Rate limits only count when ChatGPT responds, so humans can chat freely without worrying about usage caps. The system works across multiple platforms including web browsers and iPhones, making it easy to use anywhere.

This new feature has changed how people work together with AI. Groups can now plan trips, brainstorm ideas, create content, and make decisions together in real time. Before this update, users had to share ChatGPT’s responses separately with others. The announcement made by OpenAI on November 20, 2025 marked a significant milestone in collaborative AI technology.

OpenAI designed the system to enhance productivity through collaborative workflows. The concept is not entirely new, as Microsoft Copilot introduced a similar group chat functionality before ChatGPT’s implementation. The AI adapts to each group’s dynamics, providing support when needed and staying quiet when humans are communicating well on their own.

As OpenAI continues gathering feedback, they plan to refine the experience based on how people use it. This marks a significant shift from ChatGPT as just a helpful assistant to a true collaborative partner in group environments.
