Fact-checkers are struggling to do their jobs. Many people don’t trust them. Some believe fact-checkers are politically biased. Others think corporate or cultural influences shape their decisions. When funding comes from governments or philanthropic groups, questions about neutrality often follow. That mistrust makes it harder for fact-checking labels to have any real effect.

Deepfakes are making things worse. These AI-generated videos and audio clips can make real people appear to say things they never said. Studies across eight countries found that people who’d seen deepfakes before were more likely to believe false information later. Social media users are especially vulnerable. Researchers found this effect holds true even among people with strong critical thinking skills.

The risks go beyond politics. Deepfakes have been used to falsify medical records. AI voice clones have caused legal and emotional problems. CEO impersonations created through AI can affect stock prices. Fake evidence has even been submitted to insurance companies. These threats cut across healthcare, finance, and government.

Some tech solutions are emerging. Blockchain technology creates permanent, tamper-proof records of documents. It stores original sources and publication dates in a way that can’t be changed later. This helps expose manipulated content.

The C2PA 1.3 specification is another tool. It tracks where content came from, who made it, and when it was created. Rating systems like NewsGuard also help. The Journalism Trust Initiative adds trustworthiness markers to news sources. These tools work on both the supply and demand sides of misinformation.

Regulators are stepping in too. Europe’s Digital Services Act requires platforms to be transparent about their algorithms. It also mandates that debunked content be labeled or shown less often. But researchers say gaps still exist, especially around why people believe false information even when they know better. Digital literacy education is increasingly seen as essential, with calls for schools to embed media literacy and analytical thinking into their core curricula. The World Economic Forum ranks misinformation and disinformation among the top global risks, underscoring the urgency of coordinated responses across sectors and institutions.
