gemini ai disrupts apple

Google’s latest move is making waves in the tech world. The company announced a native Gemini app for Mac computers on Wednesday through a blog post. It’s available for download at gemini.google/mac starting April 15, 2026. The app works on macOS 15 and higher and is available to users worldwide.

Google has officially announced a native Gemini app for Mac, available worldwide starting April 15, 2026.

This launch puts Google in the same league as its rivals. OpenAI and Anthropic already have Mac apps for their AI tools, ChatGPT and Claude. Google’s Gemini app works similarly to those competing apps. Until now, Mac users could only access Gemini through a web browser.

The app comes packed with useful features. Users can press Option + Space on their keyboard to pull up Gemini instantly from anywhere on their Mac. The app can also see what’s on a user’s screen, including local files, to offer quick help. It can break down complex charts and pull out key insights. It also generates images using a tool called Nano Banana and creates videos through Veo. Users can even ask it to check dates or fix spreadsheet formulas.

Google’s relationship with Apple played a role in this development. The two companies recently partnered to power Apple Foundation Models using Gemini. That deal has helped ease some tension between the two tech giants. The Gemini Mac app is separate from that partnership, though. It also follows Google’s earlier launch of a native YouTube app for Apple Vision Pro.

The app’s development wasn’t a total surprise. Bloomberg had previously reported that Google was privately testing a Mac version of Gemini. The shift moves users away from the browser-only experience they’ve had on Mac. The app is designed to compete with existing Mac apps already offered by both OpenAI and Anthropic.

Not everyone’s happy about the app, though. Some users have raised concerns about their auto-login settings being changed without permission. They say the app resets those settings even after they’ve made changes. Critics see this as the app taking control over system preferences. Some describe it as an invasion of privacy. Unlike AMD’s GAIA, which runs entirely offline to ensure sensitive data stays on local devices, Gemini’s cloud-based approach raises questions about data privacy protection for users who handle sensitive information. The native app is also expected to bring direct file uploads as an expanded capability for users. These concerns haven’t been directly addressed by Google yet.
