Gemini’s integration allows for natural language interactions that can connect with other apps like Calendar for scheduling reservations or appointments. Similar to advancements in multimodal AI, this feature integrates contextual understanding across various user inputs and environmental data.

Converse naturally with Maps’ Gemini upgrade—ask about restaurants, then seamlessly inquire about parking, just like talking to a savvy co-pilot.

Visual search gets a major boost too. Google Lens integration lets users point their camera at locations to instantly identify places, complete with details, reviews, and ratings. Colorful pins highlight parks, cafés, and attractions, making exploration easier without typing. The new system emphasizes improved navigation safety in complex urban environments where traditional turn-by-turn directions might be confusing.

When viewing locations, users now see enhanced cards with image previews, star ratings, and review summaries. These cards highlight key visitor talking points and helpful tips, matching the depth of information found in the full Google Maps app.

The update also includes proactive alerts for traffic jams and road closures, even when users aren’t actively wayfinding. The system generates summaries for traffic spikes and crowd density using real-time data, helping users plan smarter trips.

Additional features include a trending places section in the Explore tab and a revamped U tab showing recent searches and visits. The “Know before you go” feature offers location tips and highlights.
