In lab tests, brain implants have already allowed paralyzed patients to communicate through synthesized speech almost instantly.

The city’s experiment is focusing on non-invasive methods that don’t require surgery. While these approaches collect less precise data than implants, they’re more practical for wider use in urban settings. The technology might eventually let people control city services, robotic aids, or computer systems using just their thoughts.

However, the system has important limitations. Each user needs individual training sessions since brain patterns differ from person to person. This makes quick citywide deployment challenging. The equipment is also expensive, especially the fMRI scanners used in some versions of the technology.

Privacy concerns have emerged among residents. “We’re only collecting data with full consent,” assured City Technology Director James Wilson. “This isn’t about surveillance—it’s about accessibility and inclusion.” The project incorporates patient data security measures similar to those being developed for healthcare AI systems.

The program remains in early stages, with testing limited to volunteer participants. The research uses a model called DeWave that translates EEG signals into coherent sentences without requiring preprocessing. Researchers hope the technology will eventually support accessible public services and provide new insights into how people experience urban environments.

If successful, the city plans to integrate mind-reading interfaces into public buildings to assist residents with disabilities, potentially setting a new standard for inclusive smart city design.
