volvo secures google gemini

Volvo has expanded its partnership with Google, securing the advanced Gemini AI for its vehicles. The announcement made on May 21, 2025, positions Volvo cars as the reference platform for Android Automotive development. This means Volvo drivers will be among the first to experience Google’s latest features, including Gemini AI.

Gemini AI will replace the current Google Assistant in Volvo vehicles later this year. Google showcased this technology using the Volvo EX90 at their I/O 2025 event. Drivers with Android Auto mirroring app won’t have to wait as long, as they’ll gain access to Gemini in the coming weeks.

Volvo’s Google integration leaps forward with Gemini AI replacing Google Assistant, bringing conversational intelligence to drivers sooner than expected.

The new AI assistant offers capabilities far beyond simple commands. Drivers can compose and translate messages using natural language, query the vehicle’s user manual through conversation, and access information about destinations while traveling. Unlike the command-based Google Assistant, Gemini understands and responds to natural conversations.

This technology will be available in Volvo vehicles equipped with Google built-in systems. The partnership, which began in May 2017, has evolved significantly over the years to deliver cutting-edge technology to Volvo drivers. The fully electric seven-seater EX90 was used to demonstrate the features, though it’s not yet clear which other Volvo models will receive the update first.

Google’s automotive strategy continues to expand, with their built-in technology now available in more than 20 brands and 50 car models. Volvo was one of the first automakers to adopt Android Automotive, making this partnership a logical next step. Under this new agreement, Google will develop faster feature rollouts for Volvo vehicles before other automotive brands.

The benefits for drivers are significant. Voice assistance makes sense behind the wheel, reducing the need for screen interactions that take eyes off the road. Gemini’s natural language processing allows for more intuitive interaction while driving.

This partnership represents a shift in the automotive industry, where carmakers have historically resisted big tech integration in vehicles. As voice assistants present a logical solution to reduce screen dependence in cars, this collaboration between Volvo and Google could accelerate advancements in connected car technology for drivers worldwide.
