Millions of jobs worldwide are at risk as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the workforce. By 2030, up to 300 million jobs could be lost globally. That’s about 9.1% of all jobs worldwide. In the US alone, nearly 47% of workers face automation risks over the next decade.
AI’s reach is already being felt across many industries. About 30% of US companies have already replaced workers with AI tools like ChatGPT. Among companies already using ChatGPT, 49% report replacing workers. And 90% of companies have adopted AI in some form. That number could grow.
90% of companies have already adopted AI — and nearly half are replacing workers in the process.
Some sectors are being hit harder than others. Customer service is one of the biggest targets, with 80% of those roles potentially automated. Data entry and administrative jobs are also at risk. Around 7.5 million of those positions could disappear by 2027. Computer programmers, accountants, and legal assistants are also facing higher displacement risks.
Recent job loss numbers are adding up fast. In just the first half of 2025, nearly 78,000 tech jobs were cut due to AI. Back in May 2023, around 3,900 US job losses were directly linked to AI. In total, 13.7% of US workers say they’ve already lost a job to a robot or AI system.
The manufacturing sector has felt automation’s impact for years. Since 2000, about 1.7 million US manufacturing jobs have been lost to automation. AI is now expanding that trend into white-collar work too.
Public concern is growing. About 64% of Americans believe AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next 20 years. Only 1 in 6 employers expects to reduce headcount because of AI in 2026, but 40% of employers say they expect workforce reductions where AI handles tasks. Experts warn that reskilling programs are becoming essential to help workers transition into roles that AI cannot easily replace.
Still, it’s not all bad news. AI could also create 170 million new jobs by 2030. Job postings for analytical roles grew 20% after ChatGPT launched. The shift is real, but it’s also complicated. The workforce isn’t disappearing. It’s changing. Women face disproportionate risk, with 79% of employed women in the US working in jobs at high risk of automation, compared to 58% of men. Looking ahead, the fastest-growing new profession between 2025 and 2030 is projected to be Big Data Specialist, according to the World Economic Forum.
