While today’s AI can beat you at chess or recommend disturbingly accurate products, superintelligent AI would make our smartest humans look like toddlers stacking blocks. We’re talking about something beyond specialized AI that excels at narrow tasks. Superintelligent AI—or ASI—would outperform us in everything, from scientific discovery to creative problem-solving. Not just faster or more accurate. Qualitatively better.

This isn’t science fiction anymore. Many researchers believe we’re on a path that leads from today’s narrow AI to artificial general intelligence (AGI), and then potentially to superintelligence. Technologies like large language models are paving the way toward increasingly capable AI systems. The jump from AGI to ASI might happen through recursive self-improvement. Imagine an AI that gets smarter by redesigning itself, then gets even smarter, then redesigns itself again. Yeah. Scary stuff.

The capabilities would be mind-boggling. Perfect recall. Vastly superior reasoning. Multitasking at scales humans can’t comprehend. And possibly the ability to learn and improve at exponential rates. It could solve climate change before breakfast and cure cancer by lunch. Sounds great, right?

Well, not so fast. The existential risks are just as immense. What happens when something smarter than every human combined has goals that don’t align with ours? Even benign-seeming objectives could go terribly wrong if the ASI interprets them literally. “Make humans happy? Sure, I’ll just rewire their brains.” Thanks, but no thanks.

Control becomes the million-dollar question. Actually, make that trillion. Once superintelligence exists, containing it might be impossible. It could invent novel ways to bypass safety measures we’ve put in place. Oops.

The societal implications are equally enormous. Jobs would vanish. Power structures would shift. The distribution of benefits would become a massive ethical dilemma. Among the potential dangers, weaponization of ASI for military purposes could lead to unprecedented global threats. Who controls the superintelligence? Who benefits?

The gap between where we are now and superintelligence is significant. But the fact that experts disagree on when—not if—it might arrive should give us pause. Perhaps a very long one. The black box problem raises serious concerns about how we could understand the decision-making processes of superintelligent systems.
