Goldfish have a reputation for forgetting. But even they might outperform today’s most advanced AI systems when it comes to remembering. Despite billions of dollars in investment, artificial intelligence still can’t hold onto a conversation once the session ends.

Every time a user opens a new chat, the AI starts fresh. It doesn’t remember names, preferences, or past discussions. Users have to repeat themselves constantly. This frustrates employees and slows down work. It’s one reason 95% of organizations report seeing no return on their AI investments, despite spending between $30 and $40 billion in 2025 alone.

The problem has two main causes. The first is the context window. AI systems only hold information during a single session. When the chat closes, that memory disappears.

Every session ends. Every memory vanishes. AI doesn’t carry your conversation forward — it simply forgets.

The second is catastrophic forgetting. When an AI learns something new, it can wipe out what it already knew. A model trained to handle customer service might lose its ability to analyze sales data afterward.

These aren’t small bugs. They’re deeply built into how neural networks work. New information overwrites old signals in the deeper layers of the network. Engineers have tried building wider, slower models to reduce this, but it’s still a widespread problem in machine learning research.

Privacy rules make things harder. Platforms often avoid storing user data between sessions to protect personal information. But that design choice also means context doesn’t carry over. Data silos prevent AI tools from sharing information with each other, making the problem worse.

Researchers are working on fixes. Some systems now use session memory, user-specific memory, and domain memory to store different types of information.

A newer approach called the Titans architecture uses a “surprise metric” to decide what’s worth remembering. Attention residuals also help prevent signal loss in deep networks.

There’s also a human cost. When people rely on AI to remember things for them, their own memory weakens. Unlike AI, humans build cumulative knowledge naturally over time without needing to re-explain past experiences to themselves. In contrast, persistent AI memory has the potential to transform assistants into true partners, compounding intelligence and value with every interaction.

Studies show AI users recall less of their own work than those who don’t use it. Critical thinking and deep learning suffer too. These concerns are compounded in educational settings, where only 23% of districts currently offer teachers any formal AI training. The AI forgets. And slowly, so might its users.
