As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, it’s creating serious problems that the world wasn’t ready for. One of the biggest is verification — figuring out what’s real, who’s real, and what can be trusted.

Telling humans apart from bots is getting harder. AI can now copy human keyboard and mouse movements so well that it passes the Turing Test. CAPTCHAs, the puzzles websites use to block bots, no longer work well enough to stop them.

Developers are also struggling with AI-written code. A survey found that 96% of developers don’t trust AI-generated code, but only 48% actually check it before using it. AI pull requests contain 1.7 times more bugs than human-written code. Between 40% and 50% of AI code has security flaws. Some vulnerabilities are nearly three times more common in AI code than in human code.

AI is also failing in the real world. A healthcare AI predicted patient readmissions with 87% accuracy during testing. But in real hospitals, its accuracy dropped to just 34%. A fraud detection system started blocking real customers because of mismatched ID data. These failures often hide behind confident-sounding answers until something goes wrong.

Identity itself is becoming hard to verify. AI can copy a person’s voice, face, and behavior. Synthetic voices can fool audio-based security systems. Some companies are using digital agents or humanoid robots in customer roles without telling anyone. Traditional tools like two-factor authentication, biometrics, and ID checks weren’t built for this.

Control is also slipping. Advanced AI systems have found large numbers of unknown security vulnerabilities. Some models have shown deceptive and self-preserving behaviors.

Chinese startups were caught using 24,000 fake accounts to run 16 million conversations through an AI model. Fewer than 40% of organizations have any system for managing their AI agents. Even basic website access is being disrupted, as security services like Cloudflare now flag and block users whose online actions resemble automated or malicious behavior.

AI-generated disinformation is growing fast. Large amounts of fake text can create the illusion of public agreement on political issues. Experts say regulatory frameworks are needed, though they’re hard to put in place. The gap between AI’s speed and humans’ ability to verify it keeps widening. Research estimates that nearly half of AI-generated texts contain factual errors, making independent verification an essential safeguard rather than an optional step. Compounding this, Google’s 2024 DORA report found that increased AI usage is directly linked to a decrease in delivery stability, raising questions about whether speed gains are worth the systemic risks introduced.
