french animators christmas ad

While Hollywood often dominates animation discussions, France has quietly built an impressive legacy at the Academy Awards. A group of celebrated French animators has just released a stunning Christmas advertisement that’s earning praise for its handcrafted charm, easily surpassing computer-generated competitors.

The collaborative project features work from Sylvain Chomet, known for his Oscar-nominated films “The Triplets of Belleville” and “The Illusionist.” Chomet’s distinctive style blends with contributions from Claude Barras, whose stop-motion expertise earned acclaim with “My Life as a Zucchini,” a film submitted for Oscar consideration.

“We wanted to show that human creativity still matters in today’s digital landscape,” said Michel Hazanavicius, who joined the project while completing his Holocaust-themed animation “The Most Precious of Cargoes,” a 2025 César nominee. Hazanavicius, who previously won an Oscar for “The Artist,” brings his signature visual storytelling to the advertisement.

The three-minute spot follows a family’s Christmas preparations through uniquely French animation styles. It’s garnered over two million views since its release last week, with viewers praising its emotional depth compared to AI-generated alternatives. The project demonstrates the continued influence of French animator Ron Dyens, who recently won an Oscar for his work on “Flow.”

France’s animation sector continues to receive international recognition. The upcoming European Film Awards feature French productions “Arco” by Ugo Bienvenu and “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain” by Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han among the nominees. The awards ceremony, scheduled for January 17, 2026, will spotlight the artistic achievements of European animated filmmaking.

French animation’s success stems partly from cross-border collaborations. Productions like “Tales From the Magic Garden,” featuring French participation alongside Eastern European creators, showcase this international approach.

The Christmas advertisement highlights France’s animation talent pool, which has produced five Oscar-nominated features since 2003 and multiple award-winning shorts including “Logorama” and “Le Mozart des Pickpockets.”

“French animation brings a distinct artistic sensibility that connects with audiences worldwide,” said Nicolas Schmerkin, whose production company backed the advertisement. “This project proves that traditional animation still resonates deeply in an increasingly AI-dominated world.”
